BATON ROUGE – The Southeastern Louisiana tennis team remained unbeaten with a 5-1 victory over Southern Wednesday afternoon at University Courts.

The Lions (4-0) and the Lady Jaguars (0-2) decided to forego doubles play with the threat of inclement weather in the area. Southeastern picked up the victory with singles wins on each of the top five courts with four of those victories coming in straight sets.

“I was really happy how hard we concentrated,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. “Playing singles first and trying to beat the rain will cause teams to make mistakes and we were able to avoid that for the most part. Southern has been to the NCAA tournament three years in a row, so that team knows how to fight. We had to play our best tennis to win today.”

The lone Lion victor that was seriously tested was freshman Nastya Tokareva, who ran her team-best singles record to 4-0 on the No. 2 court. The reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week outlasted Southern's Gabrielle Moore in a 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 10-5 triumph to give Southeastern its fifth point of the match.

Freshman Sarah Kriem gave the Lions a 1-0 lead at No. 5, moving to 2-0 this spring with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Morgan Taylor. Junior Valya Rusakova (3-1) pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Danielle Dixon on the No. 3 court.

At the top of the draw, freshman Reginka Nychytailova (3-1) ran the score to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph versus Southern's Demetria Woods. Freshman Renee Villarreal (3-0) clinched the victory and remained unbeaten in singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lois Alexis on the No. 4 court.

After Southern picked up its lone point on the No. 6 court, Tokareva closed out Moore to provide the final margin.

Southeastern will be back in action on Saturday, facing Alcorn State at 1 p.m. in Lorman, Miss.
