HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana freshman
Renee Villarreal remained undefeated in singles play, but No. 63 Virginia Tech handed the Lions their first loss of the season by a 6-1 score Wednesday night at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Southeastern had its 12-match winning streak snapped, falling to 12-1 overall this spring. The nationally-ranked Hokies improved to 12-2 overall with the victory.
Despite the first loss of the spring, Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes was pleased with the efforts of his young team.
“Virginia Tech is a very good team and I was extremely proud of how our team fought today,” Hayes commented. “The crowd tonight was fantastic – the best I've seen in my 12 years at Southeastern. It meant a lot to both our players and myself to have that level of support tonight.”
Virginia Tech opened the match by winning the doubles point. At No. 1, Illinca Stoica and Kelly Willford defeated the Southeastern freshman pair of
Reginka Nychytailova and
Nastya Tokareva, 8-2. Villarreal and sophomore
Adriana Castillo (9-1) were handed their first loss of the spring at No. 2, where Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita powered to an 8-4 victory.
Villarreal improved to 11-0 in singles play as a Lion, besting Williford, 6-4, 6-1. VTU picked up straight set wins on courts 2, 3, 5 and 6, as Tokareva (12-1), senior
Isabel Brito (9-1) and Castillo (3-1) all fell for the first time this spring. The only three-set match was on the top court, where Stoica rallied past Nychytailova, 3-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Southeastern will continue its eight-match home stand on Saturday, when it hosts Southland Conference foe McNeese State at 12 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
