Southeastern Hosts Louisiana-Lafayette in Non-Conference Action

Lions look to head into Monday's Southland finale on a high note

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team will be back in action on Friday, hosting in-state foe Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The Lions (17-2) enter the match having already clinched a share of the Southland Conference regular season title. Louisiana-Lafayette carries a 13-10 spring record into Friday's match.

Southeastern is returning to the court after its biggest weekend of 2013. Last week, the Lions picked up Southland Conference road victories over Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State. Southeastern rallied from dropping the doubles point in both victories.

The Lions are a combined 85-28 in singles play this spring and feature five players with double-digit singles victories. Freshman Renee Villarreal leads the team with her perfect 17-0 singles mark, followed by senior Isabel Brito (14-2), junior Valya Rusakova (14-5), freshman Nastya Tokareva (14-5) and freshman Reginka Nychytailova (12-7).

In doubles play, Southeastern has amassed a 29-11 record. Villarreal and sophomore Adriana Castillo lead the Lions with a 12-3 doubles mark.

Louisiana-Lafayette's top singles player is junior Sandra Ahlqvist, who enters Friday's match with a 13-7 singles mark. In doubles play, the team of freshmen Melissa Burckharrt and Juliette Clement has posted a team-best 14-3 doubles record.

After Friday's match, Southeastern will look to clinch the Southland title outright when it hosts Nicholls State on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex. The first 75 students in attendance will receive free food courtesy of Southeastern Athletics.
