HAMMOND – After helping Southeastern Louisiana clinch the Southland Conference regular season championship, Lion freshman
Renee Villarreal was named the Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Villarreal earned the award for the second time this season. The Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico native was previously bestowed the honor on March 19.
Villarreal helped Southeastern (19-2, 8-1 Southland) to clinch the fourth regular season league title in school history with a 6-1 victory over Nicholls State on Monday. On the week, she was 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles play with sophomore
Adriana Castillo in victories over Louisiana-Lafayette and Nicholls.
Her two straight-set singles victories ran her unblemished singles record to 19-0 this spring. In doubles play, she and Castillo have paired for a team-best 14-3 record. Villarreal is a key member of an incoming class that has helped the Lions bounce back from last season's 1-10 league finish.
Southeastern is closing the 2013 regular season on Tuesday, hosting Alcorn State at 1 p.m. and Jackson State at 6 p.m. The Lions will be the top seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, scheduled for April 26-28 in Beaumont, Texas. The tournament winner receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
