HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball coach Jim Yarbrough announced Wednesday the signing of two junior college players to a National Letter of Intent for the 2013-14 season.
Signing with the Lions was forward Devonte Upson of Amarillo, Texas, along with guard Andrew Guillory of Fort Worth, Texas. The duo will join guard Josh Filmore (Orlando, Fla.), who inked with the Lions during the early signing period, as newcomers to the 2013-14 squad. Southeastern, an NCAA Division I member of the Southland Conference, returns eight letterwinners and three starters off a team that finished 13-17 overall and 10-6 in league play.
“We have some big shoes to fill with the loss of a good senior class led by
Brandon Fortenberry,
Roosevelt Johnson and
Todd Nelson,” Yarbrough said. “Getting some more signees in the spring was very important to us. Devonte Upson is a good athlete who is a good shot blocker and has good timing off the floor. We think he's very hungry to get better and we'll look for major contributions from him from the beginning.”
Upson, a 6-foot-9, 205-pound product, spent the past two seasons at Trinidad State (Colo.) Junior College. As a sophomore in 2012-13, he started in 25 games, averaging 11.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and was second in NJCAA Region IX with 1.6 blocked shots.
He posted five double-doubles on the season for the Trojans and scored in double figures in 19 contests. Upson scored a season-high 16 points in two games last season, the last coming against Laramie County (Wyo.) Community College where he also grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds.
Guillory, a 6-3, 200-pound guard, played the previous two seasons at Hill Junior College where he averaged 13.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists as a sophomore in 2012-13.
“He's a guy that I was really impressed with in how he focused on getting his teammates involved,” Yarbrough said. “He's a guard that can play in a number of different positions for sure … you can plug him in at the 1, 2 or 3. He can guard at a couple of different positions on the floor. He's good on the ball, he's good off the ball. I just love his completeness as a player.”
He started in all 30 games for the Rebels last season and shot 53 percent from the floor and 43 percent from behind the 3-point line. Guillory scored in double figures in 25 games for the Rebels, scoring 20 or more in five contests. He scored a season-high 25 points, with four 3-pointers, in a win at McLennan (Texas) Community College on Jan. 26.
