LAKE CHARLES, La. –
The Southeastern Louisiana University track and field teams fought through inclement weather Friday for a strong showing in first-day action at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Opening day action came to a grinding halt late in the morning, after the 10,000-meter run, when severe weather moved into the area interrupting the multi events and forcing a five-hour weather delay.
But the sky cleared and the sun came out, allowing the day's other finals – the men's and women's hammer throw – to be contested.
“It was an interesting first day, kind of bittersweet” coach Sean Brady said. “Misha Frazier was huge for us in the women's hammer as was Jessica Fekete. Jeffrey Milliron PRed in the men's hammer, but Jonathan Kinchen was off. Throwing in a wet ring, his lack of experience showed.”

“The good thing is all the throwers that scored today have at least two more events.”

Southeastern earned 11 points in the women's hammer throw, landing third in the first-day point totals. Frazier, a freshman, placed third (169-07), earning six points, and  Fekete placed fourth (169-07), earning five. Amber Darville (147-00), Shalicia Rochon (143-10) and Brianna Golden (142-00) finished 12th through 14th, respectively.

Milliron finished sixth, right behind Kinchen, in the men's hammer (187-05) with his new personal-best mark. Kinchen, whose conference-leading mark was topped by Stephen F. Austin's Jon Arthur to win the event (204-07), earned four points by finishing fifth (188-01). Milliron earned three points with his efforts.

Joseph LeGrange finished 20th in the men's 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:09.27.

McNeese State leads both the men's and women's team standings through two events. The men have scored 28 points and are followed by Stephen F. Austin (16 points), Sam Houston State (14) and Lamar (11) among the teams that have double-figure totals after the opening day. In the women's championship race, McNeese has a one-point lead, 15-14, on Sam Houston State. Southeastern Louisiana (11) and Central Arkansas (10) have also scored in double figures.

“We've got the long jump and few other events we're strong in coming up on day two,” Brady said. “We're on the board and that's a good thing. It'll be wet again, but we just have to be mentally tough. I'm looking forward to a good day.”

The meet continues Saturday with the conclusion of the multi events. Field event finals in the men's and women's long jump, shot put and javelin beginning at 1 p.m. and preliminaries of running events starting at 3 p.m. The championships conclude Sunday.
