HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball coach Jim Yarbrough announced Wednesday the addition of junior college transfer JaMichael Hawkins to the 2013-14 roster.

Hawkins, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard, is the fourth newcomer signed by Southeastern during the off-season joining prep product Josh Filmore along with JUCO additions Andrew Guillory and Devonte Upson.

Hawkins, a native of Jackson, Miss., spent the 2012-13 season at Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College where he averaged 17.1 points and led the Bulldogs to a 17-8 record and semifinal berth in the MACJC State Tournament. Hawkins, who started all 25 games, shot 40 percent from behind the 3-point line and 82 percent from the charity stripe.

“I am very excited about the signing of JaMichael Hawkins. He comes from a top flight junior college program and we believe he can be a tremendous weapon for us next season,” Yarbrough said. “His ability to shoot the ball will put pressure on opposing defenses. We like his size and the fact that he can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim.

“I'm very excited to get our returning players and new recruits together and begin building chemistry and familiarity for the coming year. With JaMichael I believe we've addressed some very important needs.”

Hawkins originally signed with Alcorn State out of high school and averaged 5.6 points for the Braves as a freshman in 2011-12. He scored a season-high 17 points in his collegiate debut against Blue Mountain (Miss.) College and added 15 points against Mississippi Valley State and 12 against Tulane.
