Jonathan Kinchen (men's discus) earned second-team honors while
Misha Frazier (women's hammer),
Casey Revere (men's javelin) and
Shalicia Rochon (women's shot put) picked up third-team honors
The top-three finishers in each event earned All-Southland Conference honors. The winner earned first-team honors, the second place finisher earned second-team accolades while third place finishers are honored with third-team awards.
McNeese State graduate student David Rooney and junior Jasmine Webb were named the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year by vote of the league's head coaches.
Rooney earned consecutive men's outdoor track and field athlete of the year honors after he won the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend. The graduate student from Dublin, Ireland, was the fifth highest scorer at the meet while winning the 5,000-meter run in a time of 14 minutes 22.17 seconds, which was 15 seconds better than the second-place finisher. The Cowboy claimed victory in the 10,000-meter run in dominating fashion after setting a Southland championships record with a time of 29:50.83. Rooney was also tabbed as the men's outstanding running performer.
Webb became the second consecutive Cowgirl and third in school history to earn women's outdoor track and field athlete of the year recognition. Mariah Georgetown claimed the award last year while Sita Waru won back-to-back honors in 2000 and 2001. The junior from Dallas, Texas, was the women's high-point scorer of the meet after she claimed victory in the 100 and 200 meters before running a leg of the first-place 4x100-meter relay team. The Cowgirl was also tabbed women's newcomer of the year and women's outstanding running performer.
Oral Roberts senior Jack Whitt claimed the men's outstanding field performer award following a victorious performance in the pole vault. The Norman, Okla., native, set the outdoor championships record when he cleared 18 feet, 2.5 inches to beat his closest competitor by six inches. Whitt also set the pole vault record at the indoor championships in February in the Golden Eagles' first year as a Southland member.
Northwestern State's Janae Allen notched top women's track performer accolades after following three top-five finishes at the championship. The senior from Abbeville, La., won the discus throw with a distance of 161-7 before finishing second the shot put after a throw of 47-7.75. The Lady Demon placed fifth in the hammer throw with a throw of 169-0. Allen is the fourth Lady Demon to claim the award while Northwestern has claimed the award five times in the last 11 years.
Oral Roberts senior Morrie Turner earned the men's newcomer of the year merit. Turner proved too much in the long jump where he won the event with a distance of 24-7. Since the award was introduced 2006, six different schools have been represented.
Northwestern's Hanoj Carter and Central Arkansas' Brooke Cassar were named men's and women's freshmen of the year, respectively.
Carter is the first Demon to win the award in school history after scoring the most points by any freshmen in the championship. The freshman from Shreveport, La., won the 200 meters in a time of 20.73 seconds. He medaled in 100 meters after finishing third in a time of 10.45.
Cassar impressed as she won the 5,000 meters by more than eight seconds with a time of 17:30.24. The Bear from New South Wales, Australia, claimed gold in 10,000 meters by more than 30 seconds after she completed the race in 36:12.47. Cassar is the first Central Arkansas representative to earn the honor.
Stephen F. Austin coach Phil Olson was named the men's and women's coach of the year as Stephen F. Austin swept the championships for the second time in school history (2011). Olson and the SFA track and field squads also swept the titles at the indoor track and field championships making Stephen F. Austin the third school in Southland Conference history to claim all four titles. Louisiana-Monroe (1987) and Texas State (2004) are the only other schools to accomplish the feat. Olson led the women's team to its fifth consecutive title while leading the men's team to its second title in three years. He has claimed the women's coach of the year award in five consecutive seasons. On the men's side, Olson garnered the men's coach of the award for the second time (2011).
