HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior first baseman
Kevin Carr was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Carr hit .444 this past week (8-for-18) while turning in three multi-hit performances, helping Southeastern to a four-game winning streak. He scored six runs and drove in another five. Carr reached base in all five games, compiling a .545 on-base percentage.
The senior from Chandler, Arizona, brought his season average up to .376, placing him second in the conference. Carr is the third Lion to win a weekly award from the conference this month, joining
Brett Hoffman (March 3) and
Jacob Seward (March 16) as previous winners.
Abilene Christian senior right-hander Thomas Altimont was also named the Southland pitcher of the week. He shut out the league's second-best hitting team, holding McNeese State to five hits in a complete-game effort Sunday. Altimont sat the Cowboys down in order in the third, fourth, sixth and eighth innings.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Lamar senior designated hitter Kyle Markum and Houston Baptist senior outfielder Zach Nehrir. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Houston Baptist senior right-hander Taylor Wright, Lamar senior left-hander Chase Angelle and Nicholls senior right-hander Ryan Deemes.
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
