HAMMOND, La. – Former Southeastern Louisiana standouts Kari Yost (women's soccer), Tommy Connors (football) and Cass Hargis (baseball) comprise the university's 2017 Athletics Hall of Fame class, which was announced on Monday.
The trio will be inducted on Sept. 23 in a private ceremony. All three will be honored at halftime of the SLU football team's Southland Conference contest with Lamar in Strawberry Stadium.
The induction of Yost, Connors and Hargis will bring the total members of the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame class to 141. Yost is the seventh women's soccer player to earn induction into the Hall of Fame and the first since her former teammates Kendra Oney and Kim McNally were inducted in 2012.
Connors' induction will mark the second straight year and third time in the past five years a former football player has been inducted. In 2016, Southeastern posthumously inducted former Lion Calvin Favron. Connors is the 61
st former member of the Lion football program to enter the SLU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Like Connors, Hargis will mark the second straight season a former Lion baseball great has been honored, as Kenny Lehrmann was part of the 2016 class. Hargis is the 19
th former SLU baseball player to earn induction.
Yost, a native of Diamond Bar, California, was a standout defender for the Lady Lions from 2003-06, contributing to a pair of Southland Conference regular season championships. As a senior, she was named Southland Conference Player of the Year after helping SLU record 11 shutouts and allow just two goals in league play and was rewarded for her performance in the classroom as the league's Student-Athlete of the Year.
A three-time All-Southland Conference selection, Yost was a first team All-Louisiana choice as a senior. She also earned third team NSCAA All-South Region scholar notice and was twice named to the Southland Conference All-Academic team. In 2015, Yost was selected to the program's 20
th Anniversary Team.
Connors was a standout defensive back for the Lions from 2006-10. The Marrero, Louisiana native was a consensus All-America as a junior, when he posted a team-high 108 tackles. A four-time All-Southland Conference selection, Connors ranks third in school history with 355 career tackles and his nine interceptions are the ninth-most by a Lion.
A two-time first team All-Louisiana selection, Connors was also a standout in the classroom, earning Southland Conference All-Academic honors in each of his final three seasons. Early this year, Connors was named the head football coach at his alma mater, Archbishop Shaw High School.
Hargis, a native of Meraux, Louisiana, patrolled the outfield for the Lions from 2008-11. At the conclusion of his four years under then-head coach and current Director of Athletics
Jay Artigues, Hargis left as the program's career leader in hits (299), runs (217), triples (18) and games played (232).
Hargis also ranks among the school's career leaders in doubles (54, 2
nd), RBI (146, 6
th), walks (106, 5
th) and hit-by-pitch (34, 5
th). A 2010 All-Southland Conference selection, Hargis earned Freshman All-America accolades from
Louisville Slugger and
Ping! Baseball. Like Connors, Hargis has also returned to his alma mater following his playing days, as he is currently the head baseball coach at Holy Cross High School.
The Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame inductees are elected by an eight-member selection committee. Nominations can be submitted to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information
