Southeastern Improves to 6-0 With Pair of 10-0 Wins on Day One of Mardi Gras Mambo

SLU matches best start in program history with wins over Manhattan and Toledo

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team continued its undefeated start to the 2023 season with a pair of run-rule victories on Friday's opening day of the 2023 Mardi Gras Mambo Friday afternoon at the Youngsville Sports Complex.

Southeastern (6-0) opened the day with a 10-0 victory over Manhattan (0-1) before besting Toledo (2-4) by the same score in the nightcap. The 6-0 start for SLU matches the longest win streak to start a season for the program – a mark established by the 2018 team.

In the opening game of the day, Maddie Leal led Southeastern at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance and a team-high three RBI. Maddie Watson hit her first home run of 2023 in the win over the Jaspers, while Lexi Johnson added two RBI of her own.

Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux (1-0) earned her first win of the season, striking out three and allowing one hit in 3.0 innings of work. Alyssa Romano and Ellie DuBois each tossed a scoreless inning to complete the mercy-rule win.

The nightcap saw Johnson and Audrey Greely each hit home runs, while Watson and Madison Rayner each drove in a pair of runs to fuel a 10-hit attack. Cera Blanchard (3-0) struck out four Rockets and scattered three hits in her first complete-game shutout as a Lady Lion.

Southeastern will continue tournament play Saturday, facing Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. and St. Thomas at 5 p.m. Live stats for both games will be available at www.LionSports.net/sidearmstats/softball.
