BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar used a six-run sixth inning to hand the Southeastern Louisiana University a 6-2 loss in the finale of a Southland Conference series Saturday afternoon at the LU Softball Complex.
Southeastern (22-7, 2-1 SLC) clinched the series with a doubleheader sweep on Friday, but could not remain unbeaten in league play. Lamar improved to 10-21 overall and 3-3 in Southland Conference action.
Maria Detillier led SLU at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run.
Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs (all earned) in 5.1 innings of work.
All of the game's scoring came in the sixth inning, as Comeaux and Lamar starter Aaliyah Ruiz (4-7) matched zeroes through the first five frames.
In the top of the sixth, Detillier put SLU on the board with a shot well over the left field fence. Later in the inning, consecutive two-out doubles by
Lexi Johnson and
Bailey Krolczyk staked the Lady Lions to a 2-0 lead.
Southeastern could not put Lamar away, however. The Cardinals sent 10 to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs each off both Comeaux and
KK Ladner.
SLU had one more shot in the top of the seventh, but Ruiz retired the Lady Lions in order to close out the victory.
Southeastern will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting ULM at 6 p.m. at North Oak Park. Wednesday's game will be televised on ESPN+.
