Booster Information
According to the NCAA's definition of a representative of athletics interests, if you are reading this publication, you are most likely a "booster." A representative of athletics interests is an individual who is known, or should have been known by Southeastern Louisiana University to:
• Have participated in, or be a member of an agency or organization promoting Lion athletics.
(this includes members of the Athletic Foundation)
• Have made financial contributions to the athletic department or to an athletic booster organization.
• Be assisting in any way with the recruitment of Southeastern prospective student-athletes.
(Assisting in recruiting constitutes an NCAA violation)
• Be assisting in any way in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes.
• Have been involved in any way in promoting Southeastern athletics.
It is important to note that once you perform any one of the above duties, you have become a representative of the Southeastern athletic department, and you will maintain that identity indefinitely. The NCAA rules governing booster activities are very strict, and can be difficult to understand. If you are performing duties in support of Southeastern athletics, and are unsure whether they conform to NCAA regulations, it is always better to ASK BEFORE YOU ACT by contacting the Southeastern Athletic Compliance Office.
Every Southeastern supporter wants to avoid actions which might penalize the institution and the athletics program. The manual of NCAA rules is thick and complex, and the opportunity to inadvertently break the rules exists. However, if all students, Former Students, fans and friends of Lion Athletics will follow these two simple principles, then Southeastern will continue to operate in compliance with NCAA rules regarding outside involvement by athletic representatives.
Principle #1: Please do not become involved in recruiting a prospective student-athlete, beyond making a recommendation to a Southeastern coach. Recruitment is the sole responsibility of the Southeastern coaching staff.
Principle #2: Please do not provide any extra benefit to a currently enrolled student-athlete. Anything other than a conversation with a Southeastern student-athlete should be reviewed by the Athletic Department or the Athletic Compliance Office prior to any activity taking place.
By keeping these principles in mind, Former Students and fans will enjoy their involvement with the Southeastern Athletic Department free from worry about NCAA violations.
