Lions Track and Field/Cross Country Coaching Staff
Assistant Coach, Brian Mondschein
Brian Mondschein begins his first season as an assistant coach with the Southeastern Louisiana track and field program after a fourteen year run at Division II Kutztown (Pa.) University. Mondschein's main responsibility will be working with the Lions' throwers.
"Brian is the latest addition to our staff. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our teams on top of being a great coach and person," Head Coach Sean Brady said. "I believe he will be able to recruit some athletes from areas regionally and nationally where we have not recruited before. I look forward to working with him this season in the years to come."
While at Kutztown, Mondschein helped turn the Golden Bears track and field program into a powerhouse in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. In 14 years at Kutztown, Mondschein's squad collected 18 conference championships, produced 90 individual conference champions, 38 Division II All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans and two PSAC scholar athletes of the year.
Prior to Kutztown, Mondschein served as an assistant with the University of Virginia track and field program from 1987 to 1992. While at Virginia, Mondschein helped the Cavaliers to their best conference finish in the 1990's when the men's squad finished fourth in indoors and outdoors and the women's team claimed third overall. During his time at Virginia, Mondschein coached 12 All-ACC athletes and four All-Americans.
From 1984-1987, Mondschein served as an assistant coach at Rice where he worked with the men's field events, combined events and hurdles as well as the women's javelin, hurdles and multi events.
Mondschein began his coaching career in 1980 at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif. and coached jumpers, hurdlers, sprinters and combined events for both men's and women's teams.
Mondschein turned in a stellar career as a student athlete at the University of Washington where he earned All-America honors by finishing seventh in the decathlon at the 1977 NCAA Championships. During his freshman campaign in 1973, Mondschein was part of a U.S. Junior 4x400m relay team that posted a then junior world record.
A 1977 graduate of the University of Washington, Mondschein holds a BA in Broadcast Journalism and English and also holds IAAF Level Two Throws Instructor credentials.
Mondschein's father, Irv, was a member of the 1948 U.S. Olympic Team, competing in the decathlon. The elder Mondschein went on to coach at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania before joining the coaching staff at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mondschein's wife Lauri currently serves as the Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Compliance at UL Monroe.
