Lions Set to Play Host to No. 3/4 LSU

Southeastern brings potent offense into midweek contest

Ty Summerlin will try to break the school hits record against LSU on Tuesday.
Game Notes: March 10, 2009

HAMMOND -
Fresh off a hard-fought and high-scoring weekend series to open the conference schedule, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (7-5, 2-1 Southland Conference) will play host to No. 3/4 LSU in front of a sell-out crowd on Tuesday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Lions will try to capitalize on the momentum of a 9-8 win on Sunday at Texas-San Antonio on Tuesday night.  The Southeastern offense tallied nine runs its last time out, and a potent Lion offense has plated at least eight runs in its last nine games.  Southeastern boasts a .319 team batting average entering Tuesday's contest.

Sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis leads the way for Southeastern as the Lions' hottest hitter.  Riding a career-high 11-game hitting streak, Hargis boasts a .400 batting average entering Tuesday's matchup.

Senior shortstop Ty Summerlin looks to stay on track in a record-breaking season.  The Vancleave, Miss. native is one hit shy of tying the school career hits record of 210 set by Mackey Waguespack from 1995-99.

However, if the Lions hope to defeat LSU for the second consecutive season (Southeastern was victorious on March 11, 2008 in Baton Rouge by a score of 6-3), they know the pitching and defense will have to step up.

"Our offense is good enough that we are going to be in every game," head coach Jay Artigues said.  "But we need to play better defense behind our pitchers, and we have to limit the number of free passes we give out.  If we pitch and play defense the way we're capable of and our offense keeps putting up the kinds of numbers it has been, then we have a chance in every ballgame."

First pitch for the Lions and Tigers is set for 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.  The game is sold out.  Live stats and streaming audio will be available online at www.LionSports.net, and the game can be heard in Hammond on KSLU 90.9 FM.
