KENNER, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University beach volleyball team swept past in-state rival Nicholls, 5-0, before dropping a tight dual to Spring Hill, 3-2, at Coconut Beach Volleyball Complex during opening day action of the UNO Invitational.
 
Southeastern won all five flights against Nicholls (0-14) in straight sets.
 
Jolie Hidalgo and Meagan Scuderi, the Beach Lions' No. 1 pair, picked up a 21-15, 21-14, win. Hannah Barosh and Michelle Mirarchi teamed up in the second flight for a 21-12, 21-13, victory that proved to be the deciding point.
 
Hannah Brewer and Jackie McGee won their first set, 21-17, in the third flight before being pushed to extra points, 27-25, to clinch the win. Avery Carroll and Linsey Sackett earned a, 21-15, 22-20, win in the fourth flight, while Mabry Ward and Eryn Wilks picked up an easy 21-8, 21-7, win in the fifth.
 
Against Spring Hill (10-5), SLU (7-9) went up 2-1 in the dual before the Badgers took the final two flights for a comeback victory.
 
Ward and Wilks (12-0) extended their winning streak to 12 consecutive, grinding out a three-set win in the fifth flight, 21-14, 27-29, 17-5. Hidalgo and Scuderi (14-2) were victorious in straight sets once again, 21-16, 21-16, in the first flight, giving the Beach Lions a brief lead in the overall contest.
 
SLU wraps up the two-day event Friday with duals against North Florida (13-6) at 9 a.m. and host New Orleans (10-8) at 3 p.m.
